Cholesterol and Atkins 

Atkins suggests doing a baseline cholesterol test before starting the diet so you can see how the diet affects your cholesterol. I can quote from the book here:
(page 111 on the 2002 version of the book).

"It (your cholesterol) will probably go down and in cases where your total cholesterol goes up what you will almost invariably find is that your HDL (good) cholesterol goes up more than your LDL (bad) cholesterol does, thus improving the all important HDL/LDL ratio."

Measure your cholesterol if are concerned and see how it changes over time. The book seems to clearly state that the controlled carbohydrate approach will improve your cholesterol.
